Chapter Twelve

Barney had always had an open house, he welcomed visitors whenever they turned up at his cottage, and it was no different the following afternoon when Benjamin knocked on his front door before heading to the pub for the late afternoon and evening shift. He was immediately welcomed in and offered a cup of tea.

As they talked and the kettle boiled, Benjamin looked out at the barn damaged by the storm – the tarpaulin secured on the roof, the temporary wood used to hold the dislodged doors shut. The low-lying mist across the fields beyond the barn made for an eerie scene much like the one up at the farm when Benjamin had woken this morning, the beauty of each and every pine tree shrouded in grey.

‘I can’t believe another Christmas is almost upon us.’ Barney topped up each mug with milk and Benjamin shook his head to the offer of sugar.

‘The years turn around too quick.’

‘Even quicker when you get to my age,’ Barney quipped. ‘Be warned.’

‘I’ll try to remember that.’ Benjamin picked up his mug of tea as they moved over to sit at the table.

‘The farm seems as busy as always. I’m not sure how Heather and Danny manage it all.’

They did usually manage it well but clearly something had gone wrong this year. ‘Mum knew I was walking this way so asked me to let you know that the wedding plans are all in hand, there’s nothing to worry about. Tilly made some signs, too – did you see them?’

‘She sent me some pictures and I wholly approve. Not that it’s my wedding, of course.’

‘It’s not, but you’re an important part of it.’ His mum had asked him to stop by Barney’s on his way to work this afternoon to make sure the man who was to all intents and purposes the father of the bride wasn’t fretting about anything. He was always apologising for showing up at the farm unannounced and Heather wanted him to know it wasn’t a problem at all. ‘Mum says anytime you have questions or want to check things, go up there, you’re always welcome.’

‘I appreciate that. I may wander up later, get out of Lois’s way when she’s making dinner.’

‘She likes her cooking; I can understand that, it’s soothing.’

‘I checked the long-term weather forecast this morning and it’s predicted to be a dry day for the wedding. At least we don’t have to worry about the bride and groom being pelted with hailstones like the ones yesterday. Some of those were like golf balls.’

‘They were shocking. I was at Tilly’s shop and I think she was worried one would come through the window.’ When Barney gave him a look that suggested he was going to ask him about his visit with Tilly, Benjamin changed the topic. ‘When you go up to the farm, take a look at some of the decorations the girls made – they’re stored in one of the sheds. The veranda is going to look amazing.’ He was waffling now to deflect attention from himself.
